United for Literacy has been supporting learners across Canada for 127 years with free literacy programs that help people of all ages build the skills they need to succeed.
Today, our charitable organization works with adults, families, and children and youth in communities all over the country, and we want to go further to help more people! Strong reading and critical thinking skills are necessary in today’s high-speed, high-tech world. Having these skills from an early age sets a child up for success.
Why it matters
Sometimes we’re asked, “Isn’t school enough?”
Yes, school is great for most children, most of the time. But think back to when you were in school. Maybe you needed a helping hand to get up to speed with multiplication or your friend wasn’t sure how to write an essay. Or maybe there was someone who just didn’t do well, no matter how hard they tried. Some parents can help their kids or pay for a private tutor. But many families in Canada need free, community-based support for their children who need a helping hand.
To find out more about what we offer, please visit our Programs page or search your region in the drop-down menu.
Your donation enables tens of thousands of people across Canada to build stronger literacy skills. Financial gifts help us run free programs that reach almost 40,000 people each year.
With your help, we can reach more people in communities across Canada. And it isn’t just individual lives that are improved: Studies show that even a 1% increase in literacy levels can raise the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) by approximately $50 billion.
Gifts of new children’s books will be distributed to community centres, daycares, and other programs that don’t have the budget to provide them. Sometimes, the books we share are the only books in a child’s home.
The new books we need most:
Board books (0-4 years)
Picture books (0-4 years)
Young Adult (YA) or teen novels
Graphic novels (all ages)
