The issue

Behind every number is a person. A child who feels left behind at school, a parent unable to read a note from a teacher, an adult missing out on job opportunities.

How United for Literacy helps

Making learning accessible — everywhere

United for Literacy is a national charitable organization working to make learning possible for everyone, everywhere.

We believe every place can be a learning place. We deliver our free programs in schools, community centres, shelters, anywhere we’re invited.

Across Canada — in urban, rural, and remote communities — we work with local partners to create programs that meet real needs. From homework clubs and summer camps for kids to literacy, skills training, and tutoring for adults and newcomers, we support learners at every stage.

Our impact

In 2024, your support made learning possible for tens of thousands of Canadians.

  • 39,531 people in 180 communities across Canada participated in United for Literacy Programs.
  • 3,150 children participated in literacy camps in 90 Indigenous communities last summer.
  • 54 literacy workshops and conferences were attended by 3,337 parents, teachers, literacy practitioners, social service workers, and community members.
  • 54,905 free, new books distributed to children and families.
