Free Summer Camps to Encourage Kids to Read

Nov. 20 2022

Continuing to read over the summer is important for returning to school prepared and ready to build on last year's knowledge. But books and reading opportunities are not easy for everyone to access. Every year, United for Literacy offers free Summer Literacy Camps to children aged 5 to 15 in over 90 communities across Canada.

United for Literacy partners with Indigenous and urban communities to create programs that support each region’s desire to give their children a fun—and educational—summer, so that they return to school ready to learn. We're often told that the kids who start our summer camps thinking they don't like to read are enthusiastically reading and sharing books with younger siblings by the end of the summer. Last year, 97% of camp attendees said they enjoyed participating in camp, 98% of caregivers said the camp was valuable to their family and the community, and a whopping 100% of camp counsellors said that camp boosted campers' confidence and self esteem.

Summer Literacy Camps incorporate reading and learning into fun games and activities, field trips, discussions with guests from the community, and more.
