United for Literacy partners with Indigenous and urban communities to create programs that support each region’s desire to give their children a fun—and educational—summer, so that they return to school ready to learn. We're often told that the kids who start our summer camps thinking they don't like to read are enthusiastically reading and sharing books with younger siblings by the end of the summer. Last year, 97% of camp attendees said they enjoyed participating in camp, 98% of caregivers said the camp was valuable to their family and the community, and a whopping 100% of camp counsellors said that camp boosted campers' confidence and self esteem.
Summer Literacy Camps incorporate reading and learning into fun games and activities, field trips, discussions with guests from the community, and more.
