The opportunity 

United for Literacy is seeking a Camp Coordinator to oversee Summer Literacy Camps across Inuit Nunangat, specifically Nunavik, Nunavut and Nunatsiavut.  

Each summer, United for Literacy works in partnership with over 20 communities throughout the region to deliver Summer Literacy Camps. These camps welcome children aged 5 – 12 to participate in their local community program at no cost to families. The initiative aims to foster a lifelong love of reding, build learner confidence and prevent summer learning loss. The program is grounded in community collaboration, consultation, and respect for local knowledge and traditions.   

Working closely with our Program Manager, the Camp Coordinator will be responsible for the overall coordination of the program, including building and maintaining community relationships, managing and supervising staff, delivering training and support and overseeing data collection and reporting.  

The successful candidate will work from a home office however travel to training is required.   

Major Duties and Responsibilities:  
  
1) Program performance and compliance (50%)  

• Collaborate with community partners to develop strong camp delivery plans   

• Coordinate and implement Summer Literacy Camp logistics including travel, training, food, materials and shipping.   

• Oversee recruitment and hiring of camp staff through community consultation, interviewing, reference checks and managing required paperwork.   

• Provide ongoing support and communication to camp teams through community visits, follow-up calls and daily problem-solving.   

• Ensure timely submission of camp data by collecting, compiling and submitting required reporting on a weekly basis during camp period.   

• Provide general administrative support such as handling correspondence, mailing supplies, maintaining filing systems, and responding to requests in a timely manner.   

• Monitor and track camp budgets, spending, and expenses to ensure fiscal responsibility.   

2) People management (30%)  

• Recruit, train and support an effective team of camp administrators and counsellors 

• Provide guidance and solutions tailored to specific needs and circumstances of each community   

• Deliver staff training that reflects program goals and learner needs   

• Directly supervise a small team of program support staff by providing leadership and day-to-day guidance during the summer.   

• Support staff by problem solving depending on community needs and circumstances  

• Foster high performance through coaching, constructive feedback and adherence to organization values, policies and standards.   

3) Relationship management (20%)  

• Build, manage and sustain strong community partnerships related to Summer Literacy Camps 

• Serve as a liaison between community partners and management team to ensure collaboration and alignment of goals.   

• Participate in meetings, in-person or virtual, with community partners to represent United for Literacy.   

Qualifications  

• Experience working with Indigenous communities and an understanding of issues and dynamics of working in rural and remote contexts.  

• Minimum 1 year experience in related areas of work.  

• Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.  

• Demonstrated diplomacy, tact, and sound judgment in diverse situations.  

• Comfortable working with complexity and uncertainty, adapting effectively to changing circumstances.   

• Proven ability to build and maintain responsive, trust-built relationships.  

• Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail.   

• Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint) and Canva.   

• A current Criminal Records Check with Vulnerable Sector Screen (or be willing to obtain it prior to the start of employment)  

  
Working Conditions  

• During the summer months, evening and weekend work will be required. 

• Travel to training communities is an essential part of the role. All costs of travelling are covered by United for Literacy.   

• Packing and mailing materials may involve occasionally lifting items weighing up to 30 lbs.

Salary:  $ 45,330 annually (prorated)
