About United for Literacy
Each day, we transform lives and strengthen communities through literacy.
United for Literacy, formerly known as Frontier College, is a national charitable literacy organization. We believe literacy is a right. We work with volunteers and community partners to give people the skills and confidence they need to reach their potential.
History
Since 1899, United for Literacy (formerly Frontier College) has been opening doors to learning for people across Canada. Our story began when Alfred Fitzpatrick founded Frontier College through the Canadian Reading Camp Movement, bringing education and learning opportunities to workers in remote and isolated work camps through the Labourer-Teacher model.
Today, we continue this more than 125-year legacy by facilitating learning opportunities wherever people need them, including community centres, food banks, correctional facilities, workplaces, and digital spaces. Guided by the belief that every place is a learning place, we provide free, inclusive, and learner-centred support that helps children, youth, and adults build the skills they need to thrive.
We believe literacy is more than reading and writing. It is a range of knowledge that includes the foundational, digital, and essential skills people need to navigate education, work, and everyday life. Each day, we help learners build confidence, find new opportunities, and participate fully in society.
1899
Alfred Fitzpatrick founded the Canadian Reading Camp Movement to bring learning opportunities to workers in isolated and remote camps through the teacher-worker model.
1902
The teacher-worker model takes shape, with university students travelling to work camps to provide educational support while working alongside labourers.
1917
The Canadian Reading Camp Movement becomes Frontier College, establishing an organization dedicated to making learning accessible wherever it is needed.
2005
Frontier College launches Summer Literacy Camps with Indigenous communities, providing children with opportunities to maintain and develop their literacy skills during the summer months.
2022
Frontier College becomes United for Literacy, a new identity that reflects the organization’s evolution and its continued commitment to advancing literacy across Canada.
2024
United for Literacy celebrates more than 125 years of history, continuing its commitment to providing free and accessible literacy programs for children, youth, and adults across Canada.
Guided by a philosophy of student-centred learning, we co-design programs that empower individuals and communities to achieve their goals and unlock their potential.
Prompted by the calls to action of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, we are committed to advancing reconciliation and addressing systemic barriers that impact Indigenous learners. This commitment is part of our broader work to promote equity, accessibility, and inclusion by creating welcoming learning spaces where people of all backgrounds, abilities, and experiences can thrive.
Counselled by our collaborations and partnerships, we build stronger communities and amplify our collective impact across Canada.
Through ongoing assessment and evaluation, we learn new things all the time. By incorporating these ideas into our practices, we ensure our programs and approaches meet the changing needs of people and communities.
